Principal

 

 

Mrs. Hiranya Fernando

Mrs. Hiranya Fernando assumed duties as Principal of Methodist College in 2016, when Methodist College celebrated her 150th anniversary. Having joined the staff in 2002, she has served the school with dedication for more than 20 years, during which time she has balanced many responsibilities in her roles as teacher, Sports Coordinator, Co-Vice Principal and at present, the head of school. She is a past pupil of the school and holds a Bachelor of Arts with a First Class Honours in English from the University of Delhi, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Colombo, and a Certificate in School Management and Leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Under the principalship of Mrs. Fernando, Methodist College has seen much advancement in many aspects. Her dedication to the upliftment of the school’s IT facilities is admirable, with the construction of air-conditioned Smart Classrooms and the installation of over 20 Ssmart Bboards taking place under her direction. The refurbishment of the Auditorium and construction of the Basketball Court are significant infrastructural improvements she has overseen. The introduction of the Edexcel Stream, as well as the incorporation of Ffinancial Lliteracy and Wwellbeing programmes to the academic curriculum during her tenure, have greatly benefited the girls.

Known among her students for her multitasking abilities, her clear and concise delivery of lessons, and her engaging teaching style, Mrs. Fernando is an excellent teacher of English Language and Literature, having taught History, Geography, and Greek and Roman Civilization over the years. She currently teaches English Literature to students in the Middle School – a responsibility she is happy to have, owing to the unparalleled joy and satisfaction of teaching in a classroom.

Vice Principal

Mrs. Nelomi Gunawardena   

Mrs. Gunawardena assumed duties as Vice Principal of Methodist College in 2023. She has been a teacher of Mathematics and Science at Methodist College for the past 23 years. She is a trained teacher (NIE, Maharagama) and also holds a BSc. and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the Open University of Sri Lanka. Mrs. Gunawardena was a Sectional Head at Methodist College for 12 years in the Middle School, as well as for the O/L classes. She is an efficient and dedicated teacher, who is well loved by all students. 

Co-Vice Principal

Mrs. Devshani Samaranayake

Ms. Samaranayake assumed duties as Co-Vice Principal of Methodist College in January 2023. She is a past pupil of the school, and was well-known for her athletic abilities, even being appointed the Games Captain in 2009. She holds a BA in Geography and an MSc in Geoinformatics from the University of Peradeniya, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Colombo. Ms. Samaranayake was the A/L (Arts) Sectional Head from January 2019 till she took over her role as Co-Vice Principal. In addition to being an excellent Geography teacher, Ms. Samaranayake is known for her efficiency and her multitasking skills.  

Headmistress 

Mrs. Nilmini Kurukulasooriya 

Mrs. Kurukulasooriya assumed duties as Headmistress of the Primary School in January 2022, after her role as a Sectional Head from July 2020 to December 2021. A past pupil of the school, Mrs. Kurukulasooriya has served Methodist College for the past 25 years, having been a Class Teacher of Grades 1 to 5 for 20 of those years. She guides the students of the Primary both firmly and kindly, ensuring discipline in their early years at school. She teaches Mathematics, English and Christianity to students in the Primary, also having taught Sinhala, Environmental Studies and other aesthetic subjects in the past. Mrs. Kurukulasooriya was also a warranted Sylvanna of the 1st Colombo Little Friends
